Topaz Tourmaline Culinary Talents 2016

Yet another pioneering project in the field of hospitality in Sri Lanka, Hotel Topaz and The Tourmaline successfully organized the First ever inter-school culinary creations competition in early April.

More than 110 students representing 22 schools of Central region gathered at Hotel Topaz/The Tourmaline, Kandy on April 2nd Saturday for the grand competition.

Prior to the competition day, training sessions were conducted by veteran Chefs and F&B personnel for all the participating students and teachers.

Students got opportunity to learn basics and some fine secrets related to each of the event area at those training sessions.

On the battle day, the novel format of the competition that engaged student teams to showcase their creative talents in 5 areas viz. Cake Decoration, Salad Mixing, Sri Lankan Cooking, Mocktail and Vegetable Carving required them to actively participate in each event showing team spirit and move from one event to another in given time slots. Each team comprised of 5 students and for each event area they got 45 to 60 minutes to complete and then move on to the next cooking event.

All required utensils and the ingredients were provided by the Hotel for all the teams alike. An eminent panel of judges consisting veteran chefs and F&B personnel of the region provided impartial judgment which was followed by the professional level feedback to the students to improve on.

Closing ceremony was held with the participation of Her Excellency Ms. Radha Venkataraman – Assistant High Commissioner of India as the Chief Guest. Mahamaya Girls College were the 2nd runners-up, Girls’ High School were the 1st Runners-up while the team from Pushpadana Girls’ College won the overall championship.
